There are different kinds of anime /manga which could be categorized in various ways. But they could be divided with the type of audience recommended to watch them and they could fall in any of these:
1. Doujinshi
This is a type of self-published manga often referred as "fan-work" because it is made and produced by fans of an original series.
2. Gekiga
Another type of manga which means 'dramatic pictures, primarily experimental and literary.
3. Hentai
These are sexually oriented manga with adult content. (perversion)
4. Josei
These are normally written by adult woman aimed for woman ages 18+. (adult content but not always sexual.
5. Seinen
Similar with Josei but are aimed at men ages 18+.
6. Shōujo
meaning virgin、 is an anime for young girls ages 10+. It tends to focus on romance.
7. Shōnen
Similar with shoujo but are aimed at boys 10+, plot are mostly targeted on actions, sports and/or romance.
8. Kodomo
Translated as child. It is designed for young children with short span of attention and learning to read. Normally teaches children with good conduct and lessons.
9. Shōujo-ai / Yuri
Shoujo-ai means girl-love and yuri is translated as Lily, a manga based on female-female romantic relationship.
10. Shōnen-ai / Yaoi
Similar with shoujo-ai which is directed to boy-boy romantic relationship. Shonen-ai means Boy's love while Yaoi is an acronym for yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi (no climax, no punch-line, no meaning), manga.wikia.com.
11. Kazoku
Are animes intended for the whole family. Rated G, so no age age range.
12. Mina
Are mostly drama animes.
